First Energy’s Perry Nuclear Generating Station wanted to improve the shielding on their RHR line. Instead spending time and dose to cover the line with temporary lead blanket shielding every outage, Perry sought to make the shielding permanent. They contacted NPO and we got to work on a design that is quick to install, seismically qualified, and provides adequate attenuation.

The final product is stainless steel encased solid lead clamshell style pieces. This noncombustible shielding contains between 0.63” and 0.7” of solid lead and weighs approximately 60 lb per piece, or 240 lb per linear foot. Each piece interlocks and is held in place with stainless steel buckles for permanent installation.
